Intro

Moses’ Call

In Exodus 3:10, God comes to Moses in the burning bush and tells him that he wants Moses to go talk to Pharoah.

Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.

Moses’ Conundrum

Exodus 3:11 - Moses questions God about his ability.

And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

In Exodus 4, Moses tells God that he isn’t fit for the job.

And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

Moses’ Confidence

King James Version (Chapter 3)
And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
God was going to be with Moses
God assured Moses that he would bring the people out
God assured Moses that they would serve God on Mount Horeb/Sinai

Moses’ Confrontation

In Exodus 5, we see Moses and Aaron go in and tell Pharoah to let God’s people go. Pharoah gets irate because he thinks that they’re being idle (slacking, lazy). So he adds to their labor, and doesn’t let them go.

Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God. 9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

Moses’ Cry

Exodus 5:22, Moses cries out to God.
The Blame on Moses
King James Version (Chapter 5)
And they (Israelite Foremen, men who supervised the Israelite workers) said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.
The Blame on God

Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people?

Why are you treating your people so bad?
The Bewilderment of Moses

why is it that thou hast sent me?

I told you God that I wasn’t good at talking to people!
The Bleakness of the Moment

For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

Pharoah is kicking our tails, and you haven’t done anything at all, God!
You promised me that you’d take care of this, God.

When Things Looked Bleak, God Said, “Look at This”

Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.

God delivered in a mighty way. He brought the children of Israel across dry ground through the Red Sea, and with a mighty hand delivered them out of bondage.

David and Goliath

A little ruddy shepherd boy versus a 9 1/2 ft giant.
Everyone was scared, but David had God on his side, and when things looked bleak, God said, “Look at this.”

And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. 34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. 36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. 37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.

David came, not in his own strength, but in God’s strength.

Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee

And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hands

3 Hebrew Boys

When things look bleak in the firery furnace, God said, “Look at This.”
They were bound hand and foot, they couldn’t do anything, but they leaned on God’s strength.
When a man has no strength, if he leans on God, he becomes powerful.
Dwight L. Moody

Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent uhis angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

Jesus Christ

Galatians 4:4-6 “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you wa sign;

Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,

And shall call his name Immanuel.

He went to Calvary, on the darkest day of all. God turned the lights out so everyone could see the light of the world.
When things looked bleak, and the Savior died, God said, “Look at This.”

And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. 29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. 30 But God raised him from the dead:

Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay

Conclusion

When God wants to move a mountain, he does not take a bar of iron, but he takes a little worm. The fact is, we have too much strength. We are not weak enough. It is not our strength that we want. One drop of God’s strength is worth more than all the world.
Dwight L. Moody
He often lets situations become very extreme before He intercedes, so that the greater the problem the greater the power and glory of Christ will be seen.
John G. Butler
When things start to look bleak, God may be fixing to tell you, “Look at This.”
